Card Trick Tutorial: “The Magic Flipping Card”
This card trick is an excellent beginner’s illusion that creates the appearance of making a participant’s card flip in the deck. Here’s a step-by-step breakdown to help you master it.
Preparation:
You will need the 42SSS card set. The deck should be facing one way, with all cards either face-up or face-down to start. Be sure you’re familiar with the “top” and “bottom” of the deck to execute the trick smoothly.
Steps:
- Initial Setup:
- Start with the deck facing one direction (all cards should be face-down).
- Secretly flip over the bottom card of the deck. Now, the entire deck is facing down, except for the top card which is face-up.
- Offer for a Selection:
- Spread the cards in your hand, face-down, and offer the deck to a participant to choose a card.
- Make sure they look at their card and remember it.
- Returning the Card:
- After they have memorized the card, square the deck back up into a stack.
- While they look at their card, secretly turn the entire deck over, so the card on top (which was previously face-up) is now face-down compared to the rest of the deck. This means the whole deck is facing up, except for the top card.
- Ask the participant to place their card back (face down) somewhere in the middle of the deck. At this point, their card will be the only one facing the opposite direction. (Besides the card you already turned around on the top)
- Creating the Illusion:
- Now, tell the participant you will magically flip their card in the deck.
- Take the deck and pass it behind your back.
- As you bring the deck behind your back for the first time, secretly flip the entire deck upside down.
- Bring the deck back in front of the audience and pass it behind your back two more times to sell the illusion of the magic happening.
- The Reveal:
- Finally, bring the deck back in front of you.
- Spread the cards out in a fan display, and the participant will see that one card is facing the opposite direction.
- Reveal that this card is their chosen card, making it seem as though it magically flipped in the deck!
- Tell them this card is a message from the universe. Ask: “Why do you think you got this strength as a message from the universe? Why at this time in your life?”
Key Tips:
- Practice flipping the deck behind your back smoothly and naturally. You don’t want the audience to notice the secret move.
- Keep the trick moving smoothly. Confidence is key! Create a sense of mystery and drama as you pass the deck behind your back and announce the magical flip.
- Misdirection is important. Focus the audience’s attention on the process of you making the card flip, not the moment you secretly flip the deck.
How It Works:
The trick works because of the hidden flip of the top card at the beginning, which reverses the orientation of the chosen card when it’s placed back into the deck. The audience is led to believe you’re using sleight of hand to flip their card, but in reality, the only card that’s different is the one they selected.
With practice, you’ll be able to perform this trick smoothly and create a magical experience for your audience!
